The Filipino Family Checklist
Technology greatly helps families to have better communication 1. Filipino families of today use apps such as Skype and Viber in order for them to communicate their OFW loved ones. With the fast pace of technology, communication has become more effective and efficient. Now, with just a tap you can instantly talk to your family and even see them. Changes of responsibilities 2. In a traditional Filipino family, the father is the provider of the financial needs of the family while the mother is responsible for the domestics needs and emotional growth of the children. Nowadays, the mother is considered head of the family while fathers stay in house doing household chores. There has been an evident exchange of responsibilities of the family. Although, both perform different tasks, the father is still regarded as strong and the most eminent figure in the family while the mothers are seen as thoughtful and calm. Family flix 3. Today, Filipino families would normally watch movies or shows together. Because of that watching a movie is considered as a family value time. However, children of today are now greatly influenced by the shows and movies that they watch. Teleseryes in the Philippines usually have stories about romantic love and teen love that even young children can watch. Children of today have become more used to watch shows even without the supervision of their parents. That's why it's so important for parents to monitor the content of TV programming and set viewing limits to ensure that their kids don't spend too much time parked in front of the TV. Reciprocity 4. Filipino children are not required to leave their homes unless they want to. Even after finishing school, children keep their close and intimate relationship to their parents by staying at least before they get married. When the children have their own family, they never forget their parents who supported them. Children give back to their parents, this is what you call "utang na loob". Out 5. Most Filipino families have the tradition of going out of the town during holy week, summer, Christmas, and on special occasions. Families usually spend time going to beaches and resorts. Marinduque and Pampanga are two of the many places that Filipinos visit during holy week because festivals usually happen in these places. For summer vacations, instead of going to the well-known Boracay, people also go to places such as Coron Palawan and Camiguin Island. Magic of Singing 6. Magic Sing (magic of singing) In every Filipino gathering, karaoke is a must for it binds everyone through singing. Filipinos see karaoke as the best way to increase their bond. Through the latest technology, karaokes now are made more convenient, smaller in size with the control built in the microphone. Now, karaokes are not just for occasions but can used be for daily bonding. Filipinos are now more creative of using youtube as their television and karaoke. Meal Time is Quality Time 7. Every meal time for Filipinos is like a family bonding. It has been said that a family that eats together, stays together. That's why even though family members have different busy schedules, they always look forward for family meals, mostly dinner, since it is when they tell stories of how their day was or etc. Nowadays, a study showed that 3 out of 4 students would not prefer to eat with their family. A commercial showed how some parents treat their child/ren during meal times, always bickering about how their son would always come home late or how their daughter never eats. They set out every 4th Monday of September as their "Kainang Pamilya Mahalga" Day to avoid barriers from hindering the relationship of family members. Gesture for respect 8. Filipino families used to practice the "mano" or kissing of the hand to the elderly. Now, just doing "beso" gesture or a simple smack to the cheeks is already considered as a sign of respect and honor to the elderly. Love for Relatives 9. Helping relatives when in need is an act of kindness and humbleness. But some may call their relatives “palamunin” which is the reality of depending to your relatives. It may sound offending but this is the real life of families in the Philippines. Although extending a hand to your relatives is not considered a bad gesture, some will really criticized the way of living of their family members. Known to be thoughtful 10. Filipinos are touchy and sentimental, always giving great values to such little things. When our beloved dies, we tend to remember them in all means. In visiting their graveyard, we would bring flowers and candles like before. Nowadays, families would even bring karaoke and catered foods just to commemorate with their loved ones! Curses 11. There are instances wherein mothers became furious on their child/ren for doing certain unruly things like getting pregnant early. They tend to say curses that predict their child's future that eventually happen for real. Sometimes they would deport their child/ren to their own exile and even sometimes they would disown their child/ren. Open-minded children 12. Broken families. Before, children rebel because of this family issue thinking that the only way to solve them is put the matter into their own hands, getting into illegals and vices and all. Nowadays, children are more open-minded, accepting the fact that their parents are never getting back together like ever, because they are not the only one experiencing this family issue. Optimism 13. Our country experience 20 typhoons at least in every year. Currently, a typhoon has once again passed and still we Filipinos proved that in every obstacle we never lose hope. Philippines is considered a third-world country but Filipinos try to put value on education. Even if not all parents have the capacity to put their children to school they still work hard to give them a better life. They see education as a way for them to improve. Philippines is one of the countries who does not practice the K-12 Curriculum. This year, the President Aquino declared that the country will slowly be going to practice the said curriculum even though it will be a big change for every Filipino student.
